My Birth Control Story

iamateenagefeminist:

If you’ve been following feminist news lately you should already know that there is a fight on capital hill to eliminate insurance coverage of contraception for women. The birth control fight has generated a lot of press, and plenty of animosity from the Catholic church and others on the right. Politicians on the right claim that no American women have trouble accessing birth control, and that birth control doesn’t need to be covered because it’s only a few dollars.

Well, they’re wrong. I don’t just know those quotes are bullshit, I’ve experienced what makes them bullshit.

I am 18 years old, and still covered by my parents insurance plan. My parents insurance plan covers birth control pills with a 26 dollar copay. Any other form of birth control is more expensive than that.

I don’t have the money to pay for birth control pills. I am a college student without a job. I cannot come up with 26 dollars every month.

I’m a college student, I’m on the dean’s list, I’m involved with several student organizations, and I’m a triple major. I’m also on medication for chronic depression, anxiety, migraine, and epilepsy.

If I were to get pregnant everything I have accomplished would be thrown away. I would also probably have to give up or change the medication I’m on, potentially putting myself in danger.

Right now, I’m stuck. I want to be responsible and take birth control pills. I know I’m not mentally or physically ready for a pregnancy, but I am simply not able to afford birth control.

The Obama decision to eliminate copays for birth control affects me. It changes my life. It will not make me more promiscuous, or more likely to have sex. It will allow me to make responsible decisions about my life and my body.

Birth control matters.
